Colour is another very important consideration. If you are in the process of designing a formal living room which will only be used by adults or when you have guests over, then choosing a lighter shade will work well in the space as the risk of the item having spills and dirt is reduced. In the event you are choosing the fabric for your sofas in the family room and you have children, pets and a house filled with guests at all times, then choosing something darker which will mask any stains and spills is going to be more beneficial to you in the long run and reduce the need of having to change the fabric because someone spilled a glass of red wine on the sofa and now you can't get rid of the stain.
The first type of summery pattern that can be great to invest in is something with a print that is reminiscent of the summer season. This can include ice cream prints, checker board patterns with beach balls and sand castles, or patterns that features summer fruit such as slices of watermelon and strawberries. This is also a great way to add some fun to your upholstery, as all of these patterns are vibrant, interesting and out of the ordinary. As mentioned above, these are often a great choice for furniture in a summer house or for patio furniture that you only get out during warmer times of the year.
Durability. This might not be an obvious consideration, but you should always think about who will be using the room. A delicate, soft fabric is fine for a formal living room, but you wouldn't want to decorate a children's playroom with it. Typically, woven patterns are more durable than printed ones, and higher thread counts also provide a longer lifespan. Though these upholstery fabrics may be more expensive, their durability makes up for the cost.
Next is silk. When looking at silk for curtain and upholstery fabrics then you are looking at sheer luxury. Silk oozes luxury and comfort and is an absorbent fabric which is used for garments, curtains and more. It is important to note that while silk may give you a luxurious finish, it is not ideal if you want darker and thicker curtains to block out the sun. Further, you will note that this material usually needs to be dry cleaned.
