Style. First and foremost, you want to try to match the style of your furniture with the style of the upholstery fabric. For example, if you are re-upholstering an antique piece, it would look very out-of-sorts to cover it in polka-dot fabric. In addition, some fabric styles create a casual appearance while others are more formal. Ultimately, how do you want your room to be perceived? How do you want your own style reflected by your furniture? Many patterns may make an attractive addition to your room, but you should always take some time to try to see the big picture and choose a style that fits the furniture, the room, and your personality.
On the other hand, in a room frequented by children or pets, white and other delicate colours are not a great idea. Some things you can consider when choosing upholstery fabric is mood and how colour temperature impacts the mood of that room. Warm and cool colours create different atmospheres. Also, try to avoid trendy colours, especially if you're not sure how you'll feel about that colour when it's not so trendy anymore.
