In actual fact, London's upholsterers share a history with the tailors of Saville Row, whose technical expertise and guiding principles of discreet detail and fit were readily adopted by London Sofa designers in the 18th and 19th Century. Placing emphasis on attention to detail, upholsterers and tailors alike developed new techniques of sewing and stitching to accentuate the human form whether as a bespoke suit or a handcrafted sofa design.
Start with wool. Wool has been used around the world for years. It is used for clothing and upholstery fabrics, though it is very important you understand this product and what it means to use it as part of your room design. Wool doesn't mean you are choosing a woolly jumper, it is a very resistant and absorbent material, but at the same time it can cause headaches when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. Wool often shrinks and can change shape easily, which means cleaning needs to be done with care following the strict instructions from the manufacturer.
There are a number of advantages to choosing velvet as your upholstery fabric which you need to be aware of. Chances are if you are already looking at this fabric, then you know the benefits, which is why you are choosing velvet in the first place. The first thing is that this materials is so soft and luxurious. Run your hand over velvet and you are welcomed by a smooth a superior feel that only velvet can provide.
Durability. This might not be an obvious consideration, but you should always think about who will be using the room. A delicate, soft fabric is fine for a formal living room, but you wouldn't want to decorate a children's playroom with it. Typically, woven patterns are more durable than printed ones, and higher thread counts also provide a longer lifespan. Though these upholstery fabrics may be more expensive, their durability makes up for the cost.
