Durability. This might not be an obvious consideration, but you should always think about who will be using the room. A delicate, soft fabric is fine for a formal living room, but you wouldn't want to decorate a children's playroom with it. Typically, woven patterns are more durable than printed ones, and higher thread counts also provide a longer lifespan. Though these upholstery fabrics may be more expensive, their durability makes up for the cost.
It's a good idea to check with the upholstery fabric supplier to identify if the material they supply is fade resistant. Over time sun is guaranteed to shine into the space, catching the fabric and we all know how damaging the sun rays can be. There is nothing worse than one side of the furniture item losing its colour, while the other side stays brilliant and bright. Fade resistance can be a major benefit and definitely something that should be taken into consideration.
In actual fact, London's upholsterers share a history with the tailors of Saville Row, whose technical expertise and guiding principles of discreet detail and fit were readily adopted by London Sofa designers in the 18th and 19th Century. Placing emphasis on attention to detail, upholsterers and tailors alike developed new techniques of sewing and stitching to accentuate the human form whether as a bespoke suit or a handcrafted sofa design.
The style of the upholstery fabric is also a big decision you are going to have to make. If you want to add a splash of colour to your room design, but still keep the piece neutral to enhance the space, then choosing something with a pattern is worthwhile. Remember that style will play a role in the type of furniture item you wish to cover. If you are covering a modern piece, then choose modern upholstery fabric, but if you are covering a traditional chair which is going to sit in your bedroom, for example, stick to more traditional patterns and styles which will complement the piece moving forward.
